We are committed to the highest standards of excellence in teaching and research. We are unique as third level drama educators in Ireland with a special emphasis on Performing Arts.

Drama and Theatre Studies (DTS) is an exciting artistic community of practising artists dedicated to exploration of performance creation. We place particular emphasis on theoretical and practical contexts,  historical, interdisciplinary and cross-cultural understanding of theatre and performing arts. The programme began as a post-graduate programme in theatre in 1986 as part of the English Department. Since then we have developed into an independent department within the School of Music and Theatre.

We offer opportunities to study theatre theory and practice at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. We have  particular strength in Contemporary World and European Theatre Practice, Theatre in Education (TIE), directing and adapting, interdisciplinary and inter-cultural performance, new Irish Theatre, physical theatre and performing arts.

We maintain close links with Abbey Theatre, Cork Opera House, Everyman Palace Theatre, and Corcadorca Theatre Company, amongst others. This provides exposure to a broad range of contemporary performance practices.
