Since our beginnings within UCC’s arts programme in 1986 and the subsequent opening of the new Granary Theatre, Drama and Theatre Studies at the School of Music and Theatre has proudly established itself as a vibrant member of the third and fourth level drama education sector in Ireland. Our staff are practicing theatre artists and academics who are committed to the highest standards of excellence in teaching and research. We have close links with the Abbey Theatre, Cork Opera House, Everyman Theatre, Corcadorca Theatre Company, and Graffiti Theatre Company, amongst others.

Our emphasis on practice, performance, and experimentation, along with our exceptional local, national, and international links to the theatre profession, makes us unique within our field.

Our students develop practical skills in making theatre and performance; their knowledge of theory and the history and politics of theatre and performance emerges through practice. In the course of our workshops, theatre visits and internships our students are continually preparing for their professional lives and building their own connections with arts professionals and arts organisations. Our alumni are thriving on national and international stages and in other theatre and performance related fields.

We excel in a range of research areas: Actor training, contemporary world and European theatre practice, dance and somatics, theatre-in-education (TIE), directing, theatre adaptation, interdisciplinary and inter-cultural performance, new Irish Theatre, physical theatre and performance studies.

We are delighted to announce that our current theatre company in association is Corcadorca Theatre Company.

It feels surreal to have only graduated from Drama & Theatre Studies in UCC two years ago. During my time in DTS, I loved the sense of camaraderie achieved by having such intimate class numbers."
