Sounds of unimaginable beauty, complexity, otherness and virtuosity. A show like this comes along all too rarely!
The most revered male singer of new music, for 30 years Thomas Buckner has won a very special niche—that of a champion of the avant-garde. In concert halls throughout the world, his “baritone-mastery” has astonished both audiences and critics. Tom has an extraordinarily flexible voice, as his experience and ability span madrigals, lieder, opera, free improvisation, extended techniques, all the way to electronically processed wordless minimalist song. He has been featured as a soloist in opera, with orchestra, chamber and in recital.
You can hear a glimpse of his unmatched technique here:http://www.thomasbuckner.com/sounds.htm
Be certain not to miss this astonishing master in a special evening concert evening concert!
The NEW YORK TIMES calls him
“A pillar of the experimental music nonestablishment”
The voice throbs with passion, the graceful way he rounds off words and phrases conveys inner calm.
-THE VILLAGE VOICE
A communicative interpretive style and a good command of timbre… a voice well-suited to the material he performs and sufficiently trained to make his singing fluent and smooth… an engaging presence!
-THE NEW YORK TIMES
Equally adept at crooning, humming, intoned speech and old-fashioned song, his smooth interpretations, subdued whispers, accentuated descriptives and the skillful use of his well-tempered voice make him a pleasure to hear!
-THE BERKSHIRE EAGLE
Music so movingly interpreted that it is hard to believe it was not written by the singer himself!
-NEW YORK NEWSDAY
A first-class baritone!
-IL GIORNALE DE NAPOLI

TSURUGA WAKASANOJŌ XI
Accompanied by
TSURUGA ISEJIRŌ,
Shamisen
Shinnai
Admission Free
For the first time in Cork, possibly the first time in Ireland, we will have a chance to see and hear the art of dramatic 18th-century storytelling.
Shinnai Jōruri, established by Tsuruga Wakananojō I (1716–1786), is a form of Japanese narrative chanting, accompanied by shamisen music, that flourished during the Edo period. It is well know for its drama and intensity, emphasising the depth of human emotions. Tsuruga Wakananojō XI is widely recognized for his exceptional vocal range and skill, and he was officially designated a ‘Living National Treasure’ by the Japanese government in 2001. He has performed in more than 30 countries, and is continuously looking for ways to make the Shinnai tradition relevant to the present day.
Truly a unique experience not to be missed!
