Ian Sexton has spent a great deal of time in church. He has been working in Anglican Church Music continuously from a young age: At 18, he became Organ Scholar of Rochester Cathedral in Kent for a year, after which he studied at the Trinity College of Music, London, with Jack Hindmarsh and Christopher Stokes (Organ) and John Henry (Harpsichord and Continuo Playing). Ian won the coveted ‘Cardnell Organ Recital Prize’ at his final recital in 1996. After graduation, Ian become the Postgraduate ‘Guinness’ Organ Scholar of Christ Church Cathedral Dublin for the year 1996 - 1997.
He was Assistant Organist of Cork Anglican Cathedral (St. Fin Barre’s Cathedral) in Cork City from 1997 to 2005 and from 2001 he has been a Tutor in Baroque and Renaissance Performance Practice, for the Department of Music at University College Cork. In 2005, Ian became Master of the Clerks Choral, of the Collegiate Church of Saint Mary the Virgin, Youghal, County Cork (Séadcomharthaí Náisiúnta).
Like many musicians, Ian is involved far and wide and he is a member of the Panel of Examiners for the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Dublin and as a Senior Examiner for the International Baccalaureate Organisation. He is a Member of the British & International Federation of Festivals for Music, Dance & Speech and he is in regular demand as a recitalist, choir trainer and accompanist and he is a regular broadcaster. He is a council member of the Incorporated Society of Musicians, London.
